Scottish Mountain Bike Leaders Association

The Scottish Mountain Bike Leaders Association (SMBLA) Award Scheme was developed by Scottish Cycling in conjunction with others to provide a framework and qualification for Leaders to deliver mountain biking as a safe and enjoyable sport and activity. It is recognised as a model for best practise throughout the UK and Europe.

Scottish Cycling is the governing body for cycle sport in Scotland and an integral part of British Cycling, the UK governing body for cycle sport.

The SMBLA Award Scheme is recognised by the Adventure Activities Licensing Service (AALS) and by British Cycling.

What do they do?

The Scheme provides training and assessment in mountain biking and leadership skills through registered SMBLA Tutors. Jonathan Collins of Snowdonia Cycle Hire & Training has been a registered SMBLA Tutor since June 2006.

There are two levels of awards:

  • Night Riding Module
  • Expedition Module
  • Winter Conditions Module
