SMBLA Night Riding Module
To attend a Night Riding Module (NRM) training course you must hold a SMBLA Trail Cycle Leader Award (TCL) or SMBLA Mountain Bike Leader Award (MBL) Award.
This award is a bolt on module for leaders who wish to lead groups at night which is outside the daytime only remit of the TCL or MBL Award.
Training takes place over one day (afternoon and evening) and assessment is three hours over just one evening.
Areas covered during training include:
- Types of lights and batteries
- The pros and cons of eating 6kgs of carrots to help you see at night
- Planning a night ride
- Preparing for the dark
- The safe cycle for night riding
- Group management at night
- Trailside repairs in the dark
- Night navigation
- Dealing with emergencies
Before attending a NRM Training Course
You must:
- Hold a SMBLA TCL or MBL Award
- Have logged four off-road night rides of two hours or more, of which two should be in terrain appropriate to your level of award
Before NRM Assessment
You need:
- A valid British, Scottish or Welsh Cycling membership which is currently £13.00 for Bronze. Join online at British Cycling or fill in '2008 BC Senior Membership Form' in the Downloads Section.
- A valid First Aid Certificate - if you don't have one, why not attend one of our First Aid Training courses?
- To have logged four more night rides
